Rotherhithe - A marshy peninsula which became a maritime area, it was from here that the Pilgrim Fathers sailed for America in the Mayflower in 1620.
Rotherhithe – The river was embanked here in the eleventh century by the monks of the nearby Bermondsey Abbey who found a Saxon cross, the Rood of Grace, in the Thames in 1117 and claimed that it had fallen from heaven and had miraculous powers. During the sixteenth century the Rood was placed on Horselydown Common (near the junction of Abbey Street and Bermondsey Street), but was pulled down by a Protestant mob in 1559. The surrounding land was until the late nineteenth century Jacob's Island, a disease-ridden slum in which Dickens set the home of the villain Bill Sikes in Oliver Twist.
