About Tufnell Park N7

Tufnell Park N7, N19. According to tradition, Tufnell Park Road is an old Roman road: its straightness makes the story likely. The country atmosphere of the area remained undisturbed for many centuries, and, as London extended, this northern part of ISLINGTON provided its share of the ‘very extensive dairies for supplying the inhabitants of the metropolis with milk’. In 1753 the Manor of BARNSBURY came into the possession of William Tufnell, a brewer’s son who attracted several legacies from rich relations; including this from his godfather on condition he changed his name to Joliffe. The medieval manor house (demolished in about 1840) stood at the junction of the Tufnell Park and Holloway Roads, on the site of the present Odeon Cinema. William Tufnell Joliffe obtained a private Act of Parliament in 1768 enabling him to grant building leases, but these do not appear to have been immediately taken up as, in the early 19th century, the painter J,M.W. Turner was still able to enjoy sketching a group of elms on the Old Roman.
